Walk into any shop before Ramadan and you will see a dozen names. Here is what actually separates the dates people ask us about most.
Ajwa
Small, almost black and fairly dry on the outside, from Madinah. The taste is gentle rather than very sweet. Many families buy Ajwa for its place in tradition, and it is the date most often given as a gift.
Medjool
Large, plump and soft, with a caramel sweetness. Our Medjool comes from the Jordan Valley. Because each date is big, a 500 g pack has fewer pieces than you might expect.
Sukkari
Golden, very soft and very sweet, from Al-Qassim in Saudi Arabia. It is often the best value for a family iftar and is sold in larger boxes.
Mabroom and Safawi
Mabroom is long, slim and chewy, for people who find other dates too sweet. Safawi is dark, moist and good for every day.
How to choose
For a gift, Ajwa or Medjool. For a family iftar, Sukkari or Safawi. If you cannot decide, a tasting box lets everyone try five varieties side by side.
